An application to the Lottery Grant was successful and a formal presentation was made to the club chairman, Ian Brogden, on the evening of Wednesday 15th August 2000.
The total funding of the development project can be analysed as follows:
Work will commence as soon as possible. It is hoped that the tennis courts will be completed before winter and the cricket nets could be started after September 2000.
Leigh Cricket Club has been awarded £326,904 in the latest round of Lottery Fund Awards announced by Sport England. This money, together with a grant from the Foundation of Sports and Art and assistance from the Lawn Tennis Association, will provide the club with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities.
New changing rooms and showers big enough to house two cricket teams will replace the existing one that was built more than 50 years ago. There will also be a new tea room which replaces one built at the turn of the last century. The existing tennis courts are to be re-surfaced with artificial grass and flood lighting will be installed while a seventh court specifically for coaching and training will be built.
Mr Ian Brogden, chairman of the club, said: "With all the improvements that we are making, such as the tennis courts and the building of three all-weather cricket nets, we hope to attract the best cricketers and tennis players to our club. We also want to provide training and coaching, to youngsters in the surrounding area, of the highest possible standard."
Mr. Brogden added: "It has been a long, hard, three-year battle but we succeeded in the end. We are now changing our name to Leigh Cricket, Tennis and Bowling Club."
